What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

PRP, which is also referred to as ACP (Autologous Concentrated Plasma), is where a concentrated mixture of platelets from your own blood is used to treat a number of Orthopaedic conditions. Platelets naturally occur in your own blood and part of their function is to stimulate healing.

When tissue is injured or inflamed, the healing process involves a complex and precisely regulated series of natural processes within the body. Platelets have a significant role to play in this process. Once the platelets are activated, they release various growth factors, active inflammatory cells. This process stimulates restoration of the injured tissue.

What conditions are the treated by PRP therapy?

  • Osteoarthritis (recommended for all affected joints e.g. hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle)
  • Joint pain (e.g. hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle)
  • Tendon injuries (torn achilles)
  • Tendonitis
  • Ligament injuries
  • Muscle sprains
  • Tennis elbow
  • Soft tissue sports injuries (muscles, tendons and ligaments)

What happens during the PRP Therapy procedure?

During or following your initial consultation:

  • Blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and put through a separation process there and then to extract the concentration of platelets
  • The platelets are then injected into the affected site after a few minutes, either with or without ultrasound guidance
  • The process takes about 30 minutes and is done in an outpatient setting
