Headache is a very common complaint that may be caused by a wide range of conditions. While many headaches are benign, they can be a symptom of serious underlying disease and should not be ignored.
The majority of headaches are due to “primary” headache disorders (i.e. they are not caused by another condition such as a tumor) and include, tension headache, migraine and cluster headache. These headaches may not have a sinister underlying cause, but they can be very unpleasant and cause a lot of suffering.
It is important not to ignore them as effective treatments are available. If headaches are not treated properly it is possible for them to become chronic. This is a common and frequently neglected complication. While the precise mechanisms by which headaches become chronic are not yet fully understood, overusing pain killers appears to be a contributing factor.
This is a reason why appropriate diagnosis and treatment of headache at an early stage may be desirable.
