MRI Scanning
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body including muscles, ligaments and tendons, internal organs and blood vessels. It emits electromagnetic radiation which is non-ionizing and, therefore, safer than X-Rays. It is painless and only occasionally requires preparation such as fasting or an injection of MRI dye (contrast).

Your Scan
You will need to be referred for diagnostic imaging by a GP or an appropriate healthcare professional before you can have an MRI scan. Ensure you bring the original request form from the GP.
Most MRI scans require you to change a gown. Once ready, your radiographer will accompany you into the scanning room and ask you to lie down on the scanner table which will move into our wide and short MRI scanner to take the images. It is important that you remain still as any movement will blur the images produced. On average an MRI scan will take approximately 30 minutes, but some scans can take longer.
Your Results
All MRI scans are reported by a Consultant Radiologist. We will ensure your results are sent back to your doctor or consultant who referred you for the x-ray quickly, usually within 48 hours, for them to discuss with you.
