Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction Surgery can help bring your breasts into proportion

Although many women wish to increase the size of their breasts, there are also a great number who find their larger bust size affects their confidence, happiness and the way they live their lives. If this sounds like an issue you deal with on a daily basis, you could well be a candidate for Breast Reduction surgery, also known as Mammoplasty.

As well as affecting the way you feel wearing certain items of clothing, larger breasts can contribute to specific medical complaints such as backache, neck pain and chafing bra straps. A larger bust size can prevent you from partaking in certain sports and activities and can cause great psychological distress.

Undergoing Breast Reduction surgery can help you by:

  • Bringing your breasts in line with the proportions of your body
  • Improving your confidence in clothing and swimwear
  • Improving your self-esteem and emotional health
  • Reducing the risk of backache and other, posture-related issues

Breast Reduction surgery involves the removal of excess tissue from your bust. This reduces the overall size of your breasts and forms a higher, uplifted bust-line.

Breast Reduction operations have helped change the lives of many women, improving their physical, psychological and emotional health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Breast Reduction surgery right for me?

There are a wide variety of reasons why people elect to have Breast Reduction surgery – it is an important and personal decision.

The procedure could be right for you if you are having physical issues related to the weight of your breasts such as backache or if you feel that the size of your breasts is affecting your confidence and self-esteem.

It isn’t just women who are eligible for this type of procedure. Men with gynaecomastia have found Chest Reductive surgery to be beneficial too.

However, if you are comfortable with the size of your breasts but are experiencing sagging, a more appropriate measure might be Breast Uplift surgery. Your surgeon will talk through the options available and advise on the different courses of action.

How much smaller will my breasts be after the procedure?

This is a decision you will come to with the advice of your surgeon. Some women just want a small reduction whereas others will feel a more substantial decrease in size is more appropriate, depending on their individual circumstances.

What does Breast Reduction surgery involve?

Breast Reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue and skin to reduce the size of your bust. The most common method of doing this is to make incisions on the underside of the breasts. The nipples are then repositioned to create a higher bust-line, the skin is re-shaped and the incisions are closed with stitches.

It is also possible to incorporate a Breast Uplift into your reduction procedure, should you wish to alter the fullness and firmness of your bust.

A general anaesthetic is administered for this operation meaning you will be asleep the entire time. Breast Reduction surgery typically takes at least two hours and you will be required to spend one or two nights in the hospital afterwards.

How long is the recovery process?

It is important to take a couple of weeks off work to heal and recover after your operation – be sure not to over-do it and avoid any strenuous exercise. For the first few weeks after surgery, you will also need to wear a special bra for added support.

Initially, expect to see some swelling during the first few weeks, before your breasts settle into their new size and shape.

Will there be scars?

There will be scars from the incisions but as these are made on the underside of your breast, from the nipple to the crease beneath, scars will not be visible when you are wearing a bikini or bra. With time and the correct aftercare, scars will fade substantially.

It is important to be aware that your breasts may naturally change in size should you put on weight or get pregnant but they will not grow back after the operation.
