Body Contouring
What is body contouring?
Are you looking to enhance the way your body looks? Perhaps you’ve tried diet and exercise, with limited success? Or maybe it’s an area that can’t be altered with your lifestyle changes? If this is the case, body contouring may be a treatment option or you.
‘Body contouring’ is a term used to describe a cosmetic procedure that reshapes a certain area of your body to achieve your desired outcome and help to give you more confidence in your appearance. It usually refers to procedures that remove unwanted, excess fat, but can also refer to other cosmetic treatments.
Which types of body contouring are available?
Here at Highgate Private Hospital our expert specialists are able to perform the following treatments in our state-of-the art facility:
-
Liposuction
Fat often accumulates unevenly, and it can be particularly stubborn to remove from areas such as your hips, thighs and tummy. Liposuction is the traditional method for removing excess fat that refuses to disappear with diet and exercise. It involves suction of the fat cells out through a small hollow tube. Liposuction does not tighten your skin, however, so for some people, a tummy tuck may also be required
-
Vaser liposuction
This is a newer liposuction technique involving an ultrasound probe that breaks down the fat cells before removal. It is a minimally invasive technique that does not involve stitches. Vaser liposuction is best used to fine tune smaller areas by removing fat and creating extra muscle definition
-
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
This procedure is useful when your target weight has been achieved, either through diet and exercise or through liposuction. A tummy tuck removes the excess skin and fat and tightens up the skin and muscles in your lower abdomen. It involves a small incision across lower tummy, below the bikini line. A full tummy tuck involves an additional small incision around your belly button
-
Male chest reduction surgery
A common problem experienced by many men is the development of ‘male breasts’. This is not always caused by being overweight; it can also be a result of hormone imbalances within your body. Fortunately, it can be treated. The chest reduction procedure involves making small incisions close to the nipples so that excess fat and tissue can be removed. Your nipples may also need to be repositioned
-
Vaginal surgery
Many women are unhappy with the way their vagina looks, especially after childbirth. The muscles around the vagina can also become weakened, leading to pain or sexual problems. Vaginal surgery can help to either tighten these muscles (vaginal tightening) or change the size or shape of the labia (labiaplasty)
Is body contouring safe?
Body contouring techniques are well established and have been in use for many years with a proven safety record. Cosmetic procedures such as those listed above are commonly performed in the UK: over 5000 people underwent liposuction or abdominoplasty in 2018 alone. Any procedure carries some risks, but our team of specialists are highly trained to minimise those risks and provide the best care possible for you.
What to expect when booking cosmetic procedures at Highgate Private Hospital
If you are considering a body contouring procedure, you can book an appointment with one of our specialist surgeons. They will be able to examine the area you have in mind and create a plan for your treatment. The surgeon can discuss what the procedure will involve and answer any questions you may have.
Body contouring typically involves a minor or minimally invasive surgical technique. You might be able to go home on the same day, or you may need to stay in hospital overnight. A general or local anaesthetic will be used depending on the extent of the procedure and the exact type of body contouring you are undergoing. The incisions for the surgery are usually quite small to minimise pain and scarring, and the recovery period varies, although we aim to help you resume your normal daily life after one week. You may be asked to wear a compression garment for several weeks to help your body conform to its new shape, and the swelling from the procedure should subside after a few weeks.
At Highgate Private Hospital we are here to care for you throughout your treatment and recovery. If you would like further details about the body contouring procedures we offer, or if you would like to book in for a consultation, please follow the links to our main treatment pages.
