If you suffer from nerve pain that is difficult to control, you may be offered one of these specialised treatments:
Radiofrequency treatment
This is a minimally invasive procedure to treat nerve pain. A needle and electric current are used to deactivate the nerves that are causing problems.
During the procedure, special radio waves heat the tip of a needle. This is then used to destroy the nerve endings that send pain signals to your brain. If you have pulsed radiofrequency treatment, you are given short bursts of the radio waves. These ‘retune’ your nerves to prevent pain, but do not permanently damage them. It is a low risk procedure. Radiofrequency treatment may give you longer pain relief than injections or a nerve block.
Cryoanalgesia
This is another safe and minimally invasive procedure, which can give you long-term relief from nerve pain. A small surgical instrument called a cryoprobe is used to numb irritated nerves with extreme cold and disrupt pain signals.
Phenol injection
An oily substance called phenol may be injected around the nerves that are causing your pain. The injection destroys the nerves that send pain signals to your brain. This can give you long-term pain relief. The procedure is only used for a small number of chronic pain conditions, where it is safe to destroy the affected nerves.
