If you have pain in your back, neck, arms or legs, you may be offered a transforaminal epidural injection. This is the latest epidural steroid injection to help relieve spinal pain.
There are two types of injections:
- A lumbar epidural injection is used to treat lower back and leg pain.
- A cervical epidural injection is used to treat neck and arm pain.
The injections contain a local anaesthetic to numb your pain and a steroid drug called cortisone to help reduce swelling and inflammation. These medicines are injected closer to the area where your nerve is being pinched than other epidural injections. They only target one side of your spine and the affected nerve can be treated more effectively. The procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes. It may give you temporary pain relief and make it easier to move your back, neck, arms or legs.
The Pain Management Team diagnoses and treats all types of problems affecting the spine. Our leading spinal team ensure that you get the best possible care from your diagnosis to rehabilitation.
