One effective way to find out what is causing these symptoms is through an oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (OGD), sometimes known more simply as a gastroscopy. This is an examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine).
The OGD is carried out under local anaesthetic or conscious sedation. The procedure is carried out using a gastroscope, a thin tube holding a camera. This service includes histology which means samples will be taken for microscopic examination.
