Orthopaedic shockwave therapy

We are pleased to now offer Orthopaedic shockwave therapy at Highgate Hospital. This non-invasive treatment is helpful in providing pain relief for patients suffering from a number of common painful Orthopaedic conditions, such as heel pain (plantar fascilitis), tennis elbow, shoulder pain, tendinopathies of Achilles tendon and Patella tendon and other painful areas like trochanteric bursitis.

The treatment works by using shockwaves to treat the painful area. The consultant locates the painful area by palpation, or in some cases using ultrasound, then applies a contact gel before administering the shockwaves. The procedure is non invasive, only lasts a few minutes and results in significant pain relief eight to ten days after the first treatment.

Generally, one to three sessions are required but your consultant will advise whether you are suitable for this therapy and discuss an appropriate treatment plan with you. Each treatment session lasts approximately 15 minutes.

This outpatient treatment is offered by Mr Charalambides, one of our Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons who specialises in Foot and Ankle problems and tendinopathies. Appointments are available by calling 020 8341 3422.
