Miss Mary Murphy has joined Highgate Private Hospital’s neurology team and brings with her more than ten years experience as a doctor and has been a consultant neurosurgeon since 2008.
The hospital is currently undergoing a £13 million extensive redevelopment and expansion programme which when completed in December 2013 will include 43 patient rooms (all en suite), a high dependency unit, four fully-equipped operating theatres, a state of the art endoscopy suite, a physiotherapy suite, 15 outpatient consulting rooms, a diagnostic suite and a private GP service.
Mark Lyons, director at Highgate Private Hospital, said: “We are very privileged to have Mary join our existing team and she will be working closely with our neurology specialist Dr Kevin Sheilds to expand the services we offer.
“Mary is a very highly regarded neurosurgeon and is one of only a handful of female specialists in her area. Her appointment means Highgate Hospital can now carry out neurosurgery in-house.
“Our patients can now come to Highgate for an even wider range of treatments and services. Launching this new service means we can now diagnose, treat and rehabilitate disorders that affect any part of the nervous system.
“Patients can benefit from Mary’s expertise in major areas of neurosurgery as well as specialist knowledge in neurological tumours, brain vasculature, and awake procedures.”
Mary, from Hampstead, added: “I am very pleased to join the Highgate team and be part of its very exciting redevelopment. There is a lovely close knit, community feel to the hospital and it is great to finally offer specialist neuro services to this area of the country.”
Mary has numerous educational posts including being a neurosurgical tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons, a surgical tutor at the Royal Free Hospital Hampstead and the neurosurgical editor for the journal Surgery.
She is also a member of the Society of British Neurology Surgeons Council and the National Specialty Advisory Committee.
Part of the Aspen Healthcare Group, Highgate Private Hospital has been established for more than 25 years and welcomes all patients, whether insured or paying for their own treatment.
