Easing the pain of headaches and migraine at Highgate Hospital

It is national migraine week this week and a leading charity has warned that Britain's eight million migraine sufferers could be missing out on the care they need due to poor training for GPs.

The Migraine Trust says that despite migraines and headaches affecting at least one in five women and one in 12 men in the UK - the same level as diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined - GPs receive around one hour's training on how to treat the conditions.

The trust is calling for more money to be spent on education and research.

Highgate Private Hospital has already been investing in this field and has a neurological service, with specialist Consultant Neurologists available to diagnose and medically manage a range of neurological conditions, including headaches and migraine.

The consultants will work closely with other specialists within the hospital including a Consultant Neurophysiologist if a patient requires specialised testing of the electrical functions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves in the limbs and muscles to help identify the site of the neurological disturbance and its likely cause.

One of the country’s top neurosurgeons has joined the Hospital and will head up the new neurosurgical service.

Miss Mary Murphy brings with her more than ten years experience as a doctor and has been a consultant neurosurgeon since 2008.

Mary has numerous educational posts including being a neurosurgical tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons, a surgical tutor at the Royal Free Hospital Hampstead and the neurosurgical editor for the journal Surgery. She is also a member of the Society of British Neurology Surgeons Council and the National Specialty Advisory Committee.

Mary, from Hampstead, added: “I am very pleased to join the Highgate team and be part of its very exciting redevelopment. There is a lovely close knit, community feel to the hospital and it is great to finally offer specialist neuro services to this area of the country.”
