Clinical interests:

General orthopaedics and trauma, primary total hip replacement surgery, total knee replacement surgery, revision arthroplasty, hand and foot surgery - inclusive of carpal tunnel decompression and medico-legal examinations and reporting.

Training & background:

After qualifying at Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, Mr Gad El Rab undertook his two-year internship at the university hospital before relocating to Dublin to commence his surgical training under the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He then went on to work in the major Orthopaedic centres in Galway University  and Navan.

Ragai continued his professional development and moved his surgical career to the UK in1980, where he took positions in Orthopaedic surgery in Cheltenham Hospital, Black Notley Orthopaedic Centre, The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, and Southend University Hospital in Essex.

Mr Gad El Rab joined the Ministry of Defence as an appointed Consultant Orthoapedic and Trauma Surgeon based in Germany and at the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital in Woolwich for five years, where he served during the Bosnian conflict gaining expertise in the management of major and severe trauma.

Thereafter, he held the positions of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Southend University Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital until he joined Newham University Hospital in 1996, where he currently, still hold the position of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Mr Ragai Gad El Rab has been involved in all aspects of training, teaching and mentoring of medical students through to senior registrars in the Teaching Hospitals in which he works, and has been active in maintaining relationships with them well into their own consultant careers. He runs local and regional training courses for the AO and has an interest and role in the management of young adult hip surgery replacements for patients with sickle cell disease, avascular necrosis and other pathology that can affect this patient demographic.

He has had many publications in the past and continues to have a keen interest in new and novel research in his areas of expertise.

He is fortunate to have had a continued passion for his role and longevity of service in his current area is reflected in the high referral rates he continues to receive for trauma cases, total hip replacements, total knee replacements, revision surgery as well as hand and foot surgery.

Ragai is a strong believer in continued professional and personal development and strives to remain up to date with advances in fields of Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma by attending seminars and courses.

In addition to his clinical and teaching interests, he has been performing medico-legal assessments and undertaking reports for injuries resulting from accidents for over 30 years now.
