It can come as a shock to find you can no longer take part in the activities you enjoy the most. What’s more, people underestimate how much pain can affect life, from stopping you from performing simple everyday tasks to achieving your goals.

Often, people will take the fastest route to relieve pain, grabbing pills and potions in the hope of a quick fix. While this may be okay for short-term sports injuries, it may not be the best solution if pain is consistent or severe.

Visiting a GP should always be the first step in understanding the cause of pain. It could be a simple sports injury which requires rest, but it could also be a symptom of arthritis, osteoarthritis or something more serious. The positive news is that once the source of pain is determined, innovative treatments are available in the form of regenerative medicine. Often not offered through the NHS, these treatments need to be performed by doctors specialising in orthopaedic or sports medicine.

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine uses advanced treatment methods to replace, engineer or regenerate cells to restore normal function to cells or damaged structures. Once these structures have healed, pain is significantly reduced, and patients can get back to their normal routine.

It can be used as a cure for many clinical health conditions, including injuries and chronic diseases, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, and back pain. But regenerative medicine isn’t just one treatment, it’s an umbrella term for various non-surgical and surgical procedures designed to relieve pain.

The four most common types of regenerative medicine are:

  • Lipogems – this is a therapy option that uses a patient’s own fat reserves (Adipose tissue) injecting precisely back into the areas causing pain. This injected fat stimulates a regenerative micro-environment whilst supporting the body as it heals, significantly reducing pain
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) – is a treatment that relieves pain by promoting long-lasting healing of musculoskeletal conditions. In this treatment, platelet-rich plasma is injected into injured tissue, stimulating the same healing response that the body provides but in a much more potent form
  • Cellular Matrix – is a combination therapy of PRP and Hyaluronic Acid and is another option in treating such conditions as early osteoarthritis and problems with your joints
  • Shockwave Therapy – is an innovative non-surgical therapy that uses an acoustic wave to deliver focused energy to painful inflamed tendons and other soft tissues in order to promote regeneration.

How can regenerative medicine relieve pain?

From ongoing sports injuries to arthritis, many people could benefit from regenerative medicine. Non-surgical are less invasive and therefore they have fewer complications and side-effects allowing patients to get back to the hobbies they love – free from pain much quicker than surgery might allow.
