A 19 year-old girl who suffered with severe acne for eight years has been helped by Highgate Private Hospital and her story will feature on tonight’s Embarrassing Bodies on Channel 4. (Monday, February 25th)
Danielle Heenan, from Cambridge, had severe acne on her back and chest and has had a variety of treatments since the condition flared up when she started high school.
Danielle said: “I have a mixture of skin conditions which means my back and chest is covered with spots. GPs have told me in the past that I am very unlucky to have such a mixture of conditions.
“No treatment I have previously been given by GPs, like low grade acne tablets or using face wash has been successful.
“Some treatment has even left me with more scarring. The last NHS dermatology department I went to wanted to refer me to a camouflage clinic that uses make up techniques, but I just saw that as covering up the problem, not dealing with it.
“I decided to apply for Embarrassing Bodies as they only pick the best specialists. I was at the end of my tether. I didn’t want to wear dresses or vests and even if I went swimming I felt I should cover up with another t-shirt over my costume to hide my acne.
“I went to Highgate Hospital in July with Embarrassing Bodies and started treatment with Dr Cate Orteu, Dermatologist.”
Dr Cate Orteu, has been practicing at Highgate for 4 years and has a clinical interest in general dermatology, inflammatory and auto-immune skin diseases, mole checks and skin surgery.
Miss Amma Kyei-Mensah, Consultant Gynaecologist at Highgate Hospital for the past 10 years, was able to confirm Danielle had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) following a gynaecological examination. A new coil was fitted by Mr Fabian Imoh-Ita, Consultant Gynaecologist.
Danielle, who has just finished studying at Cambridge Regional College, said: “The cameras followed my consultations at Highgate Hospital and my check-ups. I was nervous at first about being on the show in front of the nation but all the staff at Highgate made me feel relaxed and comfortable.
Danielle added: “I also wanted to share my story as there’s probably other people like me that hide behind closed doors and I did for a very long time, but one day I just thought ‘I’ve had enough of this’ and so applied for the show.
“I hope my appearance will help other people to come out of themselves and seek referral to a good hospital.”
