Rapid recovery hip and knee replacements.

Training & background:

Mr Matthew Hearth joined Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in January 2009.  He obtained his primary medical degree from University College London in 1993.  His orthopaedic surgical training was via Guy's, St Thomas' and King's College Hospitals.

Mr Hearth's initial training in orthopaedics and trauma was supplemented by fellowships in lower limb reconstruction.  Further fellowships included Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore King's College Hospital and travelling fellowships in North America and the UK.

Mr Hearth has led the introduction of a revolutionary new rapid recovery approach for knee and hip replacement patients at Basildon University Hospital. The rapid recovery approach for hip and knee replacement patients involves a regional anaesthetic technique (usually) with sedation. In addition meticulous pain management ensures the patient is comfortable enough to mobilise on the day of surgery. This usually means the patient rehabilitates much more quickly, and goes home after only one or two nights in hospital.
