Diabetes: Management of all aspects of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults including: Management of diabetes with new agents, diabetes and complex insulin regimens, diabetes in renal disease, hypertension management in diabetes, lipid/cholesterol management in diabetes, diabetes in young adults, diabetes in people with other medical conditions, diabetes in pregnancy and preconception counselling, diabetes and foot problems and pre-diabetes and management of individuals at high risk of developing diabetes, including obese individuals.
Endocrinology: Management of all aspects of general Endocrinology and Metabolic Medicine in adults including: Thyroid conditions, hormonal disturbance (hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism), thyroid nodular disease and goitre, adrenal conditions, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and hirsuitism, pituitary conditions, parathyroid, calcium and vitamin D disturbances, osteoporosis and osteopenia, menopausal symptoms and hypogonadism including testosterone replacement therapy.
Dr Maria Barnard trained at Bristol University Medical School. She spent time in research in metabolic medicine at the Hammersmith Hospital and at Yale University, USA.
Dr Barnard joined The Whittington Hospital in 1998 as Consultant in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General (Internal) Medicine. She was appointed Lead Consultant for Diabetes, developing a proactive, patient-centred team. In diabetes, she leads on the care of patients with diabetes and renal/kidney disease. She has a particular interest in the care of people with diabetes and thalassaemia and has given international presentations on these conditions. She is involved in service-based research and takes part in multi-centre studies assessing new technologies and treatments. She is currently involved in a research project to develop a website to support patients with type 2 diabetes.
Dr Barnard was appointed the local Clinical Lead for Co-creating Health, a national initiative to develop self-management support for patients in healthcare. She is the Caldicott Guardian for Whittington Health, being the advocate for patient confidentiality.
Dr Barnard is highly involved in medical education. She is the Training Programme Director for Specialist Trainees in Diabetes and Endocrinology in North Central London, working with UCL Partners to provide high quality training for junior doctors. In 2016, she was appointed as Director of Postgraduate Medical Education at Whittington Health, with responsibility for overseeing the education of all doctors in training at the Trust.
