Computer navigated joint replacement at Highgate Hospital
An effective new method to repair and replace hip and knee joints is being undertaken by doctors at Highgate Private Hospital.
The technique, which uses state-of the-art computer technology, has restored the movement and confidence of thousands of patients, allowing them to get back to their daily activities faster, and with greater ease. Mr Reza Jenabzadeh, Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant at Highgate Hospital, explains:
What is computer navigated joint replacement?
This surgery uses computer technology to guide surgeons as they perform joint replacement surgeries. It works through the use of a computer navigation machine, which allows the surgeon to digitally monitor each step of the surgery on a screen.
The surgeon is always in control of the operation and uses the computer to provide information on where to place the new knee/hip. It can be used for total or partial knee replacement, total hip replacement and revision hip replacement.
What are the benefits?
Not only can this technique help to improve the position of implants during surgery, it also helps to reduce errors. Other advantages include:
- reduced risk of revision surgery (replacing a failed implant)
- reduced risk of leg length inequality in hip surgery
- reduced risk of blood loss
- reduced incision size and soft tissue damage.
What type of patient can benefit?
Any patient needing a hip or knee replacement can benefit from this surgery. It’s particularly useful for complex cases such as deformities, obesity or previous long bone fractures.
Is recovery any different than traditional surgery?
Recovery should be no different – patients will start walking with crutches or a frame the day after surgery and may need the aid for up to six weeks. Patients with unicompartmental knee replacements (knees damaged in one compartment) report that their knee feels ‘more natural’ and has a greater bend.
Delivering better health outcomes for patients with greater ease for consultants, computer navigated surgery is available at Highgate Hospital. To book an appointment email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 020 8108 7031.
