Sports and remedial massage

Sports personThere are many reasons why people seek sports and remedial massage.  You do not have to be an athlete to benefit, as many aspects of our day-to-day lifestyles can affect our muscles and cause tension which may lead to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.

Sports and remedial massage is offered at Highgate Hospital on an outpatient basis, with regular clinic sessions available.

Benefits of sports and remedial massage

  • Regular massage can improve your range of movement around a joint by relieving tension and stretching the muscle.
  • Remedial treatments can also help to prevent injuries as well as treat new or old injuries.  Previous injury to a muscle, tendon or ligament can cause scar tissue to form.  Sports massage can help break down this scar tissue improving mobility and pain.
  • Massage can help to remove the waste products that build up within a muscle during exercise such as lactic acid; this helps them to recover at a faster rate by promoting the uptake of oxygen and nutrients.
  • Treatments can also help to alleviate repetitive strain injury caused by the overuse and repeated action of one part of the body, surprisingly common, in our careers and daily routines.
  • Massage helps to increase awareness of the body, helping to improve performance and reduce the likelihood of further injury.  Treatment can be designed to stimulate the muscles, for example before an event.
  • Sports and remedial massage also instills a sense of wellbeing, relaxing not only your body but also your mind, reducing anxiety and stress.

Treatment options

MassageSports massage
This option is aimed at improving an existing muscle problem or injury.  Within a treatment session you will have a consultation to identify injuries and recommend a treatment plan.  The aim of each session is to target specific problematic areas of muscle tension and treat them with the appropriate technique, it is not designed to be a relaxing massage or a full body massage.

Techniques used will include deep tissue massage, soft tissue release, muscular energy technique and neuromuscular techniques.  These will help to reduce pain and improve lymphatic and vascular flow and improve mobility.  More than one session may be recommended.

Therapeutic massage
This treatment is ideal for relaxation.  The session concentrates on the neck, back and shoulders where most of our body tension is held.  It can include some deep tissue work depending on your individual tolerances.  It is an ideal session to relieve stress and its indicators.  It is also ideal for general aches and pains in the neck and back that are very common.
