MRI
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body including deep tissue, organs and blood vessels. MRI scanning is one of the safest imaging techniques available as it emits no x-rays or radiation.
Our service
At Highgate Hospital, we have an extremity MRI scanner which provides joint and limb scans including the knees, ankles, feet, wrists, hands and elbows. As only the part of the body being scanned needs to be inserted into the magnet, our scanner eliminates the feelings of claustrophobia that some people experience when required to lie inside a full MRI scanner.
The open design also allows for greater patient comfort and enables us more flexibility in positioning your limb. Scanning times are also faster than a whole body MRI and quieter with no loud pulses or noise.
Your scan
You can drink and eat as normal before most MRI scans. Your radiographer will ask you to sit on a chair and position the limb being scanned for it to move into and through the MRI scanner, which is like a short tunnel, open at both ends. Your scan should take around 30 minutes
If you are, or there is a possibility you may be, pregnant please tell the radiographer before your x-ray.
Your results
All MRI scans are reported by a Consultant Radiologist. We will ensure your results are sent back to your doctor or consultant who referred you for the x-ray quickly, usually within 48 hours.
Referrals
You will usually need to be referred for diagnostic imaging by a GP or other healthcare professional.
