Vaginal surgery
Vaginal surgery includes procedures to tighten the vaginal muscles and/or reshape the vaginal lips. Our bodies vary enormously, but it is your own personal perception that is most important and some women simply feel uncomfortable with the appearance of their genital area, particularly after childbirth.
Childbirth can often result in the stretching of vaginal muscles leaving them weak and affecting sexual pleasure, as well as causing embarrassment or discomfort. Vaginal tightening is a procedure which tightens the vaginal muscles and surrounding tissue.
Labiaplasty is a popular procedure to reduce or reshape the labia. It is not just carried out for cosmetic reasons. The labia can become large, painful and pigmented which can, quite understandably, detrimentally affect your confidence and your sex life.
The procedure
Vaginal surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and therefore will most likely require an overnight stay in hospital. The exact nature of the operation depends on the desired result and your surgeon’s recommendation but labiaplasty involves cutting away the unwanted labia tissue to the desired shape. With vaginal tightening the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina is reconstituted to reduce excess vaginal lining and tighten vaginal muscles.
Your recovery
Following vaginal surgery you can expect soreness and swelling for a few days and will need time off work to rest and recover. Penetrative sex should be avoided for several weeks.
Appointments and enquiries
This procedure is usually carried out by a Consultant Gynaecologist, so unlike other cosmetic treatments a free consultation is not offered. For appointments or enquiries, please call us on 020 8347 3899.
