A number of treatments for varicose veins are available at Highgate via fully qualified Consultanst Vascular Surgeons.

What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are usually caused by faulty valves in the veins near the surface of the skin which can leak causing blood to flow back down the vein instead of up it, causing swelling and dilation of the vein. Symptoms and problems caused can include itching, pain, clotting, leg ulcers and skin damage and symptoms will often worsen over time.
Treatment options:
- Living with your veins: If your veins are not painful, you may wish to avoid or delay surgery or treatment.
- Non-operative treatment: Staying fit may help reduce the onset of varicose veins. A common treatment however is the use of specially designed stockings. Your Consulatant will be able to give you advice on which are most appropriate for you
- Surgery: Surgical treatment of varicose veins is a common procedure usually carried out by using minimally-invasive techniques
- Injection sclerotherapy: Used mainly in small varicose veins or spider/thread veins with no major valve problems
- Radiofrequency ablation: Some Consultants use this technique in particular groups of patients
- Laser treatment (EVLT® or ELVeS®): Suitable for some patient groups, this procedure is a quick, and often walk-in, walk-out procedure with no general anaesthetic.
- The British Varicose Vein Centres
