Rheumatology is the branch of general medicine concerned with the development, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the joints, bones, muscles and connective tissue.
 
Our service
We offer outpatient clinics with Consultant Rheumatologists, supported by our Diagnostic Service for x-ray, ultrasound and MRI scanning. Your consultant will also work closely and refer to other specialists within the hospital including Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physiotherapists, Radiologists, and Sports Physicians, where necessary. 
 
We see people with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions from complex inflammatory disorders to degenerative joint disease and soft tissue disorders, including:
  • Back and neck pain  
  • Connective tissue disease
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Inflammatory arthritis
  • Ligament injuries
  • Lupus (inflammation of connective tissue)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Muscle injuries
  • Nerve entrapment (sciatica)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Soft tissue disorders such as tennis elbow and carpal tunnel
  • Tendon injuries
  • Vasculitis

Next steps
Your GP will usually need to recommend that you see a specialist, before you can be seen or treated at hospital by a Consultant Rheumatologist.  Ask your GP to refer you to Highgate Hospital, and then call us on 020 8341 4182 to book an appointment.
