MRI extremity scannerMRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the body including deep tissue, organs and blood vessels.

This process is completely safe and emits no x-rays or radiation.  MRI scans can be taken from almost any angle and are generally more detailed and thorough than any other type of scan.

* NEW MRI scanner for Highgate *

We have been offering MRI scanning at Highgate Hospital for some time via a mobile scanner which visited the hospital once a week.  However, we are currently in the process of installing our own extremity MRI scanner which will enable us to provide this service for patients five days a week.

The extremity scanner can scan joints and limbs such as the knees, ankles, foot, wrists, hands and elbows.  With only the body part being scanned needing to be inserted into the magnet, the scanner eliminates the feelings of claustrophobia that some people experience when required to lie inside a full MRI scanner.

The open design also allows for greater patient comfort and enables us more flexibility in positioning your limb.  Scanning times are also faster than a whole body MRI and quieter with no loud pulses or noise.

Your GP or consultant and some physiotherapists and osteopaths are able to refer you for a MRI scan.  We will always ensure your results are sent back to your doctor or consultant quickly, usually within 48 hours.  For more information please contact us on 020 8341 4182.
