The specialities of general medicine and general surgery cover some of the most common and generic health conditions which may affect us. Both include a number of distinct specialist areas such as the breast, kidneys, veins, gastrointestinal and colorectal amongst others.
Our service
We offer regular outpatient clinics supported by our Diagnostic Service for any tests, scans or further investigations. Should treatment be required, a
number of general surgeons work at Highgate Hospital to perform a variety of procedures such as hernia repair, varicose vein treatment, gall bladder and appendix removal, endoscopic procedures and minimally invasive surgery.
Specialist areas covered include:
- Gastroenterology – general medicine concerning the digestive system and bowel.
- Medicine for the elderly - treatment and prevention of diseases specifically affecting elderly people.
- Renal medicine – the branch of medicine involving the investigation and treatment of diseases relating to the kidney.
- Respiratory medicine – treatment of the respiratory system including the nasal passages, trachea, lungs and bronchi.
- Colorectal surgery - the branch of general surgery concerned with the digestive system starting from the throat through to the end of the bowels.
- Vascular surgery - general surgery to treat problems involving our veins, arteries and circulatory system.
