Our faces are our primary feature and therefore a major factor in determining self-confidence in our appearance. But, as we age the skin on our faces and necks begins to sag from a loss of muscle tone.
A facelift is an operation to tighten the skin on the face, producing a firmer and smoother appearance. It primarily addresses draping skin on the jowls, which can obscure the jawline below each cheek, and the neck, sometimes described as 'turkey neck'.
Facelifts do not have an effect on the entire face. They will not eradicate lines on the forehead, around the mouth or the 'crow's feet' around the eyes and so are often performed in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments such as eyelid surgery.
In the right candidate, results can be excellent. It should not be obvious that someone has had a facelift, instead they will look young and full of vitality. It does not stop the ageing process but patients will not look as old as they would otherwise have done.
The procedure The skin on the lower part of the face and neck is lifted, the underlying muscles are repositioned, and overlapping skin removed. The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes between two and three hours, requiring a one or two night stay in hospital.
Recovery The stitches are hidden in the hairline and around the ear. There may be some swelling or bruising following surgery but this can be disguised with a little make-up, and after two weeks you should be able to return to your normal routine.
