As we age or after pregnancy, many women experience varying degrees of breast sagging and softening.  The size of their breasts may remain the same, but the firmness and pertness can be lost.  Once the breasts have started sagging, exercises will not help.

Breast uplift (or mastopexy) is an operation to reshape the breast into one which looks more youthful and feels firmer.  It is suitable for women who are happy with the volume of their breasts but would like to minimise droop.  For some women, the cosmetic surgeon may suggest a breast augmentation or breast reduction be performed also in order to achieve the desired result.

The procedure
The operation requires a general anaesthetic and an overnight stay in hospital.  Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate technique for you but incisions are usually made around the nipple and then vertically downwards to the crease underneath the breast.  The nipple is lifted into a better position and firmness increased by removing excess skin on the lower part of the breast.

Recovery
Breasts will be tender and swollen afterwards and a properly fitted bra should be worn continuously for the first two weeks after the operation.  Heavy lifting and strenuous activity will need to be avoided for several weeks to give the wound adequate time to heal.  Scarring will occur but in time will fade to a natural skin tone.
