Breast reduction (mammaplasty) is an operation to remove the excess tissue and skin from the breasts, which are reshaped, and the nipples repositioned to form smaller, uplifted breasts. The procedure is carried out with general anaesthetic and normally you should expect a stay in hospital of one to two days. Cosmetic surgery advice
Scarring will occur and must be considered when undertaking this procedure. The suture line may be anchor shaped, extending around the nipple in its new position then vertically downwards to the under-breast crease. Alternatively, it may be possible to leave a single vertical scar but this depends on the amount of tissue to be removed. Although the scars will initially be pink, they will eventually return to normal skin colour. It is your surgeon who will discuss with you the most appropriate technique for your particular condition.
The results following breast reduction are generally excellent and in many cases can dramatically change the patients' life allowing more activity with an increase in self-esteem and confidence.
