Some women’s breasts never develop to a size which they are happy with, and others lose breast size and fullness after breast-feeding or weight loss.  The concerns experienced by many women with smaller breasts are similar to those with larger breasts; self-consciousness, unwanted comments or sexual innuendos as well as difficulties in buying clothes.

FemaleBreast augmentation is an operation to increase breast size and fullness by inserting an implant behind the breast tissue.  Breast augmentation is one of the commonest cosmetic procedures, having been performed on over three million women worldwide.  The results are generally excellent and women are delighted with their new or restored figure, reporting both increased confidence and renewed quality of life.

The procedure
There are many different kinds and sizes of implants and your surgeon will discuss with you, not only the advantages and disadvantages of various types and shapes of implants, but also your suitability for surgery and any concerns you may have.  The implant is inserted under the breast tissue via an incision in the crease underneath the breast.  Breast augmentation is carried out under general anaesthetic, the operation usually takes about an hour and may require an overnight stay in hospital.

Recovery
A properly fitted bra should be worn continuously for two weeks after the operation.  Most people return to work within a few days but heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided until the wound has healed fully.  Scarring is minimal and usually hidden in the natural crease of the breast.
