Our noses are our most prominent facial feature. But, many of us are not happy with the size or shape of our noses making nose reshaping the most frequently requested facial cosmetic surgery, equally popular with both men and women. Those considering surgery are often distressed by comments or remarks made over a number of years, perhaps even to the extent that they may refuse to be photographed in profile or hide their nose behind long hair. Others may have sustained nasal injuries causing a misshapen nose.

Male faceRhinoplasty or nose reshaping is the operation to reduce and/or reshape the nose.  The most common request is to reduce the size and shape of a large nose, but occasionally an increase in profile is appropriate.

Feel free to bring photographs of the nose you wish to have, but remember, everyone is different - for instance skin thickness varies enormously so a small delicate nose cannot be made from a large thickened one. At the initial consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will discuss your requirements and provide honest advice on the outcome which can be realistically expected.

This procedure has been carried out successfully for many years and the vast majority of people undergoing rhinoplasty gain a feeling of increased self-confidence due to the improvement of their own perceived body image.

The procedure
Rhinoplasty is carried out under general anaesthetic through incisions made in the nostrils, so there should not be any external scars unless the size of the nostrils are also reduced. In this case, small incisions around the sides of the nostrils are necessary which are placed in the natural crease lines between the nose and cheek.

Recovery
Any scars will initially be pink but will eventually return to normal skin colour. If the nasal bones are to be reset, 'black eyes' may occur after rhinoplasty surgery, and the eyes and face will be a little swollen.  A plaster cast is also required to support and protect the bones while they set in their new position. Most people return to work within about a week but you will need to be careful to avoid direct contact or pressure on your nose until it has completely healed.
