Having ears that seem too large or to stick out can have long-lasting psychological affects and lead to lower self-esteem and self-consciousness. People often feel very self-conscious and may try to hide their ears behind long hair.
Otoplasty, also known as ear correction or pinnaplasty, is the procedure to reduce the size or prominence of one or both ears. Though most ear correction operations are performed on children*, adults can also benefit from pinnaplasty. The results are everlasting giving individuals’ a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette and increased level of confidence.
The procedure The operation usually takes around an hour and can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic. A small incision is made behind the ear and then the cartilage is removed or reshaped, using stitches to hold it in its new position.
Recovery A head bandage will need to be worn, for one to two weeks following surgery, to encourage healing and support the ears in their new position. Scarring is usually mild and hidden by the natural shape of the ear. Most people return to work once the bandage has been removed but any activities or sports which could cause the ears to be bent forwards should be avoided for about six months.
