A quick and simple treatment for varicose veins is available at Highgate Hospital.

Commonly termed ELVeS® or  EVLT® (Endo Venous Laser Treatment), and approved by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence, varicose veins can now be treated by laser, often within one hour.

The minimally invasive procedure is performed by a Consultant Vascular Surgeon, under local anaesthetic.  Under ultrasound guidance, a thin fibre-optic probe is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee.  Laser energy is delivered via the probe in short pulses to seal the faulty vein so that blood cannot leak through it.  After treatment, the blood in the faulty veins will be diverted to the many normal veins in the leg, eliminating the unsightly bulging of varicose veins.

Benefits of laser treatment

  • Most patients are treated within one hour on a walk in/walk out basis.
  • A typically quicker recovery time.
  • Local anaesthetic.
  • No overnight stay in hospital is required.
  • A minimally invasive procedure thus reducing the risk of scarring, infection and bruising.
  • Normal activities can be resumed immediately.

Not all patients will be suitable for laser vein treatment - your consultant will discuss the options and pros and cons with you.
