Despite maintaining their ideal weight, some men have enlarged breasts that do not respond to diet or exercise. The condition, known as gynaecomastia, is caused by excessive glandular or fatty breast issue and is very common particularly amongst older men.

Male bodyMale breast reduction surgery is a procedure to reduce the size of the male breasts by removing excess fat and glandular tissue from the area.

The procedure
Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate technique for you but in many cases an incision is made around the bottom part of the nipple for the excess fat and breast tissue to be removed.  Gynaecomastia can sometimes be corrected with liposuction, but most commonly a combination of surgical excision and liposuction is necessary.  Male breast reduction surgery involves a general anaesthetic and usually an overnight stay in hospital is necessary.  This is an effective and relatively simple procedure, which can do much to restore the confidence and quality of life for those choosing to undergo male breast reduction surgery.

Recovery
In many cases, patients are able to return to work within a couple of days but your surgeon will advise you.  Nothing heavy should be lifted for approximately two weeks nor should the patient take part in any sport, particularly contact sport for approximately a month.
