Our bodies vary enormously, but it is your own personal perception that is most important. Some women feel uncomfortable with the appearance of their genital area, particularly the size, length or shape of their vaginal lips (known as the labia minora). Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery technique to reduce or reshape the labia. It is a popular procedure and is not just carried out for cosmetic reasons. The labia can become large, painful and pigmented. This can, quite understandably, affect your confidence which, in turn, can detrimentally affect your sex life.
The procedure
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure performed under general anaesthetic and therefore will most likely require an overnight stay in hospital. The exact nature of the operation depends on the desired result and your surgeon’s recommendation but involves cutting away the unwanted labia tissue to the desired shape.
Recovery
Following a labial reduction you can expect soreness and swelling for a few days and will need time off work to rest and recover. Penetrative sex should be avoided for several weeks.
Next steps
This procedure is usually carried out by a Consultant Gynaecologist, so unlike other cosmetic treatments a free consultation is not offered to people considering labia surgery. To book a consultation, please call us on 020 8341 4182.
